The first step in joining a reenacting unit is to go and see a reenactment for yourself. See the marching and the fighting, walk through the camps and see how the soldiers live between battles. Meet and get to know the unit that you are interested in.
The process for entering the ranks of the 52nd Georgia is fairly simple. After meeting the company new recruits are voted in by a majority vote. Before you are thrown into battle a non-commissioned officer will be assigned to teach you the manual of arms (handling your weapon), marching, loading and firing and what to expect in battle.
When you look around and see all the equipment that the soldiers have it can be over whelming. No worries...... Our unit tries to keep some loaner gear on hand for new people to borrow until they can get everything that they need.
Buying what you need is no problem either. Most battles have period sutlers. They sell everything a reenactor needs and then some. It is our recommendation that before buying ANYTHING take another member of the company with you so that you get exactly what you need and at a fair price.
What you can expect is a great time on and off the battlefield. Fighting with the 52nd Georgia you will experience a wide range of scenarios. This month we may be in tents then next month we may be on campaign sleeping under the stars. Be ready to fight and march in 100 degree sunshine or pouring down rain. We even see the occassional snow. Battles may be scripted in front of the public or tacticals miles away from the nearest spectator. No matter what the scenario you will find us having a great time and trying to step back in time and get a taste of what it was like during the War of Northern Aggression.
